By: Bruce A. TuckerJunior high was a trying time for most of us. Our popularity was based upon our approval by our peers. Sometimes, that popularity was justified, sometimes not. Often folks gained popularity for all the wrong reasons while those of us on the unpopular side were rejected despite our good traits.

Much the same kind of treatment exists in the world of blogging. Except instead of being judged quickly by 12 year olds, a bloggers ideas and popularity are judged by a cast of thousands from all walks of life and all around the globe. Popular bloggers range from the socially graceful to the socially awkward, but their words are valued by a much larger audience.
Blogs (short for “web logs”) are collections of articles typically centered around a subject area posted by an individual or group of individuals. In the beginning these web logs were intended to communicate simple change information for the host site. They were not a destination in and of themselves.

Since the beginning, these “blogs” have become sources of rich commentary, biting cynicism and good humor. Many blogs are casual musings of the site owner. But to a few, writing blogs has become a full time job — and to a growing few, a very well paid full time job.

Take for example, Kevin Kelly`s Cool Tools. kk.org began as a place for a well respected author and social commentator to post information on tools he liked to use — kitchen tools, garden tools, gadgets, etc. Now, Cool Tools is a trusted source, a place folks can go to research the “best of the best.” Other popular blogging sites have similar stories. Jalopnik.com, Engadget.com, Instapundit.com just to name a few. Blogs are typically written for people who know the site owner personally, but they have grown to make experts out of these folks — folks whose opinions and words are validated by the community of the internet.

Which brings up a great feature of the new generation of blogs: accountability and peer review. In the scientific community, peer review is of utmost importance. When a researcher makes progress on an important medical advance, for example, the progress is verified by other researchers in his or her field. The same is with blogging, except in addition to other experts in the field, the blog content is verified by the internet community at large through comments or other blogs. Blogs in effect police themselves. If many people find the information in a blog useful and true, the blog gets promoted, praised and referenced.

So, can folks really make a living writing blogs? Oh yes. Through advertising and traffic and the magic of advertising services such as Google, blog sites can rake in copious amounts of money. If a person is a respected blogger, traffic to his or her site can generate hundreds or thousands of dollars per month in ad revenue. Using tools such as Google AdSense and AdWords, the blogger can imbed links to related sites. Readers visit the blog, notice the ads that are related to the article they are reading and click.

If you are an expert in a field and already publish papers and/or articles to a group of peers, you are well on your way to becoming a successful blogger. If you are a respected member of a large fan base, you too can blog about the things you love and potentially make some extra cash. Or you may just end up living through the Junior High of the internet and blog all day long to no one interested.

Rock music in all its variations is arguably the most popular, identifiable, and universal style of music throughout the world. Due to the enormous number of Rock n’ Roll composers, musicians, and bands, it is impossible to cite every major influence in this genre.

The names of many 20th century popular music styles were originally slang terms with sexual connotations (e.g. Swing, Jazz, Bop). Rock n’ Roll is no exception. In the early 1950s, as jazz became more of a listening music played by small ensembles, audiences sought music which provided an unwavering and obvious pulse for dancing. This factor, as well as the appeal of a lead singer emphasizing lyrics and the advancing development and use of electric instruments (guitar, bass, etc.) played with high energy, and with a heavy drumming backbeat, all contributed to the beginnings of Rock n’ Roll. Though Alan Freed, an early 1950s disc jockey from Cleveland, Ohio, is often credited with coining the term “Rock n’ Roll”, it can be traced back much further, at least as far back as the song written by Richard Whiting in 1934 entitled “Rock and Roll.” The style really didn’t come into its own, however, until the 1950s. A series of early hits, including “Sixty Minute Man,” by the Dominoes, and several by Bill Haley and the Comets (notably “Rock Around the Clock”), grabbed the attention of American youth.

As the new music gained popularity, musicians such as Antoine “Fats” Domino, Little Richard (Richard Penniman), and Chuck Berry emerged as its stars. In addition, with Elvis Presley’s phenomenal rise, Rock n’ Roll produced its first superstar. The music continued to gain popularity throughout the remainder of the decade with such artists as Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and many Rockabilly musicians, such as Carl Perkins, rising to prominence. By the early 1960s, Surf music had become very popular, and by the mid 1960s, Soul Music, and more especially “The Motown Sound”, were also very popular. These driving forces of early and mid 1960s pop music firmly established Rock music’s signature “straight” feel as opposed to the “swung” feel of the Jazz bands of the 1930s and 1940s and West Coast and Jump Blues, made popular in the 1940s and early 1950s by artists such as T-Bone Walker. By the 1960s, Rock n’ Roll had also found a large audience in Britain, inspiring the formation of many British bands and the “British Invasion” of the U.S. music scene.

“Beatlemania” and the Beatles’ continuing success were perhaps the best indications of Rock n’ Roll’s universal appeal and lasting popularity. “The British Invasion” also coincided with an emphasis on bands rather than individual musicians. But, paradoxically, some of the more famous names in drumming history came to prominence in this period: Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones), Mick Avory (The Kinks), and Keith Moon (The Who). The mid to late 1960s saw a proliferation of Rock bands with prominent drummers, including Cream (Ginger Baker), The Doors (John Densmore), Jimi Hendrix (Mitch Mitchell and later Buddy Miles), and The Grateful Dead (Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann). By this time, Rock drumming began to deviate from a simple and recognizable beat to include more challenging rhythms and fills requiring greater technical skill, with the “concert drum solo” becoming a common feature of Rock performances. By the beginning of the 1970s, several bands had become well established: Led Zeppelin (with prominent drummer John Bonham), Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath-that are considered founders of the Heavy Metal style. Another category that had attained wide popularity by the early 1970s was Progressive Rock, a style of music and drumming characterized by lengthier compositions, odd time signatures, and an even higher level of musicianship.

The world of technology ahs changed so fast that most people have not been able to keep pace with it. Just when you get the hang of how to log on to the Internet and start chatting on instant messenger, they come up with upgraded versions where you can speak on the headphones too. And then as soon as you get used to that there comes the web camera that allows the other person to see you. And this is not the case only with one aspect of the Internet but with each and everything that is going around.

It is actually ironical that even today most of the people working on computers use only a fraction of the applications that are available. For example, an average businessman or executive would probably be using Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint and may use the Internet for some information searches.

Another interesting aspect of the whole situation is that teenagers catch on to newer technology and can make use of it much faster than the older generation. Take webcasting fro example! I had not heard the term before I saw a program about Internet crime. To my utter disgust, I found that a teenage girl was using the concept of live webcasting to show the various girls doing the rounds. And this was being done among here own friends without their knowledge and all to earn some cash.

Sad though it might be technology has its bad and good side. The good side is that live webcasting can actually save corporates a lot of cost because now they can conduct meetings across the world using live webcasting. Documents can be shared and shown on screen and the people can converse as if they were all sitting round a table. If you actually dim the lights in the room you may actually fee that you are sitting in a meeting room.

The other benefit of live webcasting is that it can be used to chat up with friends and family across the world. It does not have to be as mundane as typing away furiously on the instant messenger and neither does it have to be only a voice chat. You can sit in front of the computer and chat with your friends and family as if they were actually there. The only thing you may not be able to do is to give them a hug. But I will not be surprised if some new technology can handle this aspect also.

If you want to know more about live webcasting and how you can use your webcam you should log onto the Internet and conduct some information search. You are sure to find a plethora of information and all that you are looking for.
